Food is Medicine
South Carolina

Nutrition is Non-Negotiable.

What We Do

Food is medicine approaches integrate nutrition into healthcare through partnerships between healthcare systems and community food organizations. In South Carolina, these coordinated programs help screen patients for food needs, connect them to resources and support families in managing or preventing conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, pregnancy-related health issues and behavioral health challenges—recognizing nutritious food as a critical foundation for better health outcomes.

Wholespire serves as the backbone organization for the Food is Medicine SC coalition, providing coordination, infrastructure and administrative support.

Our Vision

We envision a South Carolina where:

  • Nutrition is recognized as a fundamental component of healthcare.
  • Food is Medicine programs are scaled statewide.
  • There are close partnerships between healthcare and food system organizations, prioritizing access to healthy foods.
  • Policy supports sustainable, long‑term investment in nutrition security.
  • Every South Carolinian has access to the food they need for good health.

This is the future we are building, together. And we believe, unequivocally, that Nutrition is Non‑Negotiable.
