Food is Medicine Map

The purpose of this subcommittee is to guide food is medicine decision-making, program implementation, and policy recommendations by systematically mapping the landscape of food is medicine interventions statewide along with health indicators and social drivers of health.

New Statewide Map

FiMSC's Map subcommittee proudly announces the launch of the South Carolina Food Insecurity Risk Map. This innovative planning tool offers detailed, census tract-level analysis to visualize food insecurity risk across the state. According to a 2023 report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service, South Carolina ranks as the 7th worst state for food insecurity, with over 320,000 households affected.

The map was developed through a partnership among Furman University’s Institute for the Advancement of Community Health (IACH), Openfields, and South Carolina SNAP-Ed. This interactive, publicly accessible tool will empower stakeholders, service providers, advocates, and both local and state decision-makers to proactively address food insecurity within their communities.

The SC Food Insecurity Risk Map provides visual insights into key factors contributing to food insecurity, enabling more targeted and effective interventions. Data from the map can be used when writing grants, talking with legislators, or trying to better understand where to allocate resources.
